We are delighted to announce three exciting Events|News, and the dates and title of the next annual conference, all to take place during the next academic year.
First in the SPERI Calendar is a seminar entitled ‘The Banking Crisis & the Future of Banking: Reflections from Three Key Insiders’. In this seminar, three key ‘insiders’ will give their views of the banking crisis and the future of banking, before answering questions from the audience. Johnny Cameron is the former Chairman of Global Markets at the Royal Bank of Scotland, Sir John Gieve is former Permanent Secretary for the Home Office and former Deputy Governor for Financial Stability at the Bank of England, and Paul Moore is former Head of Group Regulatory Risk at HBOS and recently gave influential evidence to the Treasury Select Committee and the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards. The event, for University staff and students, will take place in ICOSS at the University of Sheffield on Tuesday 15 October 2013 in ICOSS Conference Room at the University of Sheffield. Places are extremely limited but you can register your interest by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
In this short, fiercely argued book, David Marsh explains how five years of continuous crisis management have not only failed to resolve the Eurozone’s problems but actually made things worse. While austerity-wracked southern states descend into misery and resentment, creditor countries – led by Germany – fear that they will be forced to subsidise their weaker brethren indefinitely. Constructive dialogue has collapsed as European decision-making descends into terrified paralysis, and the potential paths out of the impasse are blocked by indecision and incompetence at the top.
We are thrilled that the launch will take place at the University of Sheffield. More details will be available about how to get your tickets for this event nearer the time.
Following the success of last year’s ‘In Conversation’ event, on Thursday 20 February 2014, Andrew Gamble (University of Cambridge and Chair of SPERI’s International Advisory Board) will again be asking the questions but this time it’s Andy Haldane on the sofa.
Andy Haldane is Executive Director for Financial Stability at the Bank of England. Andy has responsibility for developing Bank policy on financial stability issues and the management of the Financial Stability Area. He is a member of the newly established Financial Policy Committee as well as several senior management committees of the Bank. He is also a member of the Basel Committee. Andy has written extensively on domestic and international monetary and financial stability; he is the co-founder of a charity ‘Pro Bono Economics’, which aims to broker economists into projects in the charitable sector, and is a former graduate of the University of Sheffield.
The event will take place in Firth Hall at the University of Sheffield; more information about this event will be available nearer the time.
Finally, we are delighted to announce the title of the SPERI 2014 Annual Conference. ‘The Global Contours of Growth and Development Beyond the Crisis’ will take place from Monday 30th June and will run for three days, at Halifax Hall, University of Sheffield.
