ThessalonikiSPERI Director, Professor Tony Payne, spent three days in Thessaloniki last week leading the mid-term meeting of a new SPERI research project that is examining the contrasting political economies of Greece, Spain and Turkey ‘in’ and ‘out’ of the ‘Eurocrisis’ of the last few years.

He was accompanied by Dr Owen Parker, Lecturer in Politics at the University of Sheffield. Owen leads the Spanish segment of the project and is supported by Dr Monica Clua-Losada (Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona) and Dr Luis Buendia (Isabel I University, Madrid).

The Greek team is led by Dr Dimitris Tsarouhas (Bilkent University, Turkey), who is also a doctoral graduate of the Department of Politics in Sheffield. The other members are Dr Pavlos Gkasis and Dr Alexandra Prodromidou, who are both Research Fellows at City College, Thessaloniki, which is the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield.

For its part, the Turkish group of researchers is led by Dr Sadik Unay (SETA and Sehir University, Istanbul) and also comprises Mustafa Kutlay (Koc University) and Fazil Kayikci (Yildiz Technical University).

The project will come to fruition next year in a concluding workshop and public meeting to be held in Thessaloniki in September 2015.
