The video of the 4th SPERI Annual Lecture delivered by Lord Robert Skidelsky and entitled ‘The Failure of Austerity’ is now available on iTunes and on youtube below.
Over 500 members of the public, staff and students of the University came to listen to the renowned author of a three-volume biography of John Maynard Keynes and were treated to a demanding but compelling account of the intellectual arguments that originally divided Keynes from what Skidelsky called the ‘Treasury view’ in the inter-war years and still divide advocates of austerity today from their critics.
Packed with historical knowledge and insights, Lord Skidelsky covered a huge range of issues and themes in economics and political economy before deploring at the end of his lecture the low level of the debate about economic policy that characterised the recent British general election campaign. The lecture ended with a lively Q&A session.
