Dr Daniela Tepe-Belfrage, Research Fellow at SPERI, is one of 5 commissioners involved in a new PSA commission on the ‘The Crisis of Care’.
The commission, launched last week, will look at the impact of austerity on the conditions of people engaged in paid and unpaid care work. According to a House of Commons Library report, women have been disproportionately impacted by tax and benefit changes; they often had to fill the gaps in social support, which have been decimated as a result of cuts in state funded services. Close attention will also be paid to how the crisis of care is affecting older people with support needs as well as disabled adults.
From the evidence gathered, the Commission will formulate new approaches to address the crisis of care for older people in Britain and it will report its findings in September 2016.
The Commission will be chaired by Belinda Phipps of the Fawcett Society and will also involve the following Commissioners: Professor Ruth Pearson (University of Leeds and Women’s Budget Group), Professor Shirin Rai (University of Warwick), Dr Juanita Elias (University of Warwick) and Dr Daniela Tepe-Belfrage.
