Crisis in the Political Economy of Southern Europe
9 & 10 September 2015
SPERI is jointly running two events in Thessaloniki in Greece in conjunction with the South-East European Centre (SEERC) of City College, Thessaloniki, which is the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield.
On Wednesday 9th September a workshop takes in place in relation to the ‘Crisis in the Political Economy of Southern Europe’ project being led by SPERI. This addresses in comparative fashion the different crises being experienced over the past few years by Greece, Spain and Turkey. Papers will be presented by Greek, Spanish and Turkish colleagues and discussed as part of the process leading to the publication of a book.
On Wednesday 10th September a public event will be held in Thessaloniki convened and opened by the Mayor of the City. SPERI’s Co-Director, Professor Tony Payne, will give a keynote lecture entitled ‘Politics and Political Economy in the Age of Great Uncertainty’. A panel of speakers, including Professor Dimitris Tsarouhas (Bilkent University, Ankara) and SPERI Associate Fellows, Dr Pavlos Gkasis and Dr Alexandra Prodomidou (both City College, Thessaloniki), will then debate the Greek crisis. The meeting will conclude with a comparative discussion that seeks to set the Greek crisis in a wider Southern European context in which the speakers will be Dr Monica Clua Lusada (Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona), Dr Sadik Unay (SETA, Istanbul) and Dr Owen Parker (University of Sheffield).
