Areas of interest and expertise: Labour markets
Thomas Hastings is a Research Associate in Work, Employment and Political Economy based in the Sheffield University Management School and also attached to SPERI. His academic background is based in Human and Economic Geography, with interests in institutional approaches to labour markets, their regulation, the changing nature of work/employment, and experiences of this.His doctoral research explored service work realities in post-industrial Glasgow (specifically call centre work) with a view to contributing to labour geography and debates on worker agency. Since his PhD his work has straddled both academia and industry, notably through his role as a Research Associate at the Saïd Business School (University of Oxford) involving partnerships with the Oxford Institute of Retail Management (OXIRM) and the Association of Convenience Stores.
His current research at Sheffield (with Professor Jason Heyes) concerns flexicurity and labour market policy within EU states, and in particular changes to employment regimes, labour policies and consequences for work/employment relations since the 2008 financial crisis.
